Peep Show
Married life as a collection of sidelong glances:
Wondering if you caught the reference
in the movie where they act exactly like we do,
or confirming our willingness to go with the quote
we’ve been given for a major purchase or repair.
Often I’m asking, with the weariest eyes,
whether you’re ready to leave the dinner party too.
I want to know whether the remark a friend or relative
just made corroborates our shared opinion about them.
Your answers couldn’t be clearer if you blinked Morse code.
As attempts at two-way telepathy go,
the vocabulary is admittedly pretty basic:
Should we? Can we? Can you believe this? See?
And of course the questions where the rest of my face
might betray me: Later tonight? Maybe?
